Umdoni Retirement Village

Cottages and Flats: The Umdoni Retirement Village has 1, 2, and 3 bedroom face brick units. There are 240 cottages in the Umdoni Retirement Village which are all sold on the "Life Right" basis.

Residents are encouraged to develop gardens around their cottages. Panic Buttons: Residents are provided with "Panic" buttons for use in any kind of emergency. Help is immediate. Click Here to view pictures of cottages.

Church Services: Anglican: Church service in the Village Chapel 09:30 except the first Sunday of the month when the service is held in Umzinto.

Church of England: Scottburgh congregation holds a bible study in the dining room at 16:30 on Wednesday.

Methodist: Church service in Relton Hall Sunday at 09:00. Bible study in the Village Chapel at 10:00 every Thursday of the month.

Catholic: Church service in Scottburgh on Saturdays at 17:30 and in Park Rynie on Sundays at 08:00.

NGK: Church Service in Scottburgh on Sundays at 09:00.

Library: The library is situated South of the post room in the same block, and is open 24 hours a day. Residents are welcome to use the facility and to borrow the books. Borrowers are asked to record their details in the book provided and to leave a 10c (or more) donation for each book borrowed.

Post Office: The Society collects post from the Post Office in Pennington from Monday to Friday. The post is sorted and placed in personal post boxes in the post room by 14:00 each day. The posting box is emptied and outgoing post is sent to Pennington Post Office Monday to Friday. Each cottage is allocated a post box the number of which is the same as the cottage number.

Doctor: A local Doctor, Dr V Vach is available by appointment for consultations in the Village on Wednesdays from 13:00. House calls can also be arranged. For appointments phone (039) 975 3387.

Outpatients: The Village has an outpatient department that is run by a Registered Professional Nurse. The outpatients department is to be found in Lourie Road and is open Monday to Friday excluding public holidays from 09:00 to 10:30. Please use your panic button for medical emergencies.

Little Shop In The Glade: The shop is open on Wednesdays between 07:30 and 08:30 and on Fridays between 11:00 and 12:00. The shop welcomes any donations especially household goods such as linen, crockery and clothing. Funds raised in the shop are paid over to the Residents Co-ordinating committee.

Tuck Shop: The tuck shop is open weekday mornings from 07:30 to 09:30. Supplies are limited but the shop provides a useful service for bread, milk, and other items. The shop is adjacent to the Post Room.

Bus Service: The Village provides a bus service into Scottburgh every Tuesday. The bus leaves from outside the Post Room at 08:30 and returns at about 11:30.

Clubs and Activities

 

Residents Co-ordination Committee: The residents of Umdoni Retirement Village enjoy access to a wide range of activities. These include bingo, bowls, bridge, the choir, Chinese painting, gymnasium, library, village shop, swimming pool (including water aerobic classes), tennis, walking, woodcarving and yoga, golf, line dancing and group fishing. While each of these activities is directly administered by its own committee or founder, the overall administration and co-ordination is the responsibility of the Residents' Co-ordinating Committee. Each activity is represented on the committee, the principal task of which is to ensure optimal utilisation of scarce resources including funding and collaboration rather than competition for 'space in the sun'. The committee is also responsible for arranging entertainment in the Village on a regular basis. The Umdoni Hall seats over 250 people.

Activities: A number of activities exist in the Village ranging from singing, to wood carving. If you have an activity or hobby that can involve others and you can facilitate a group and wish to get involved in this manner contact the Chairperson of the Residents' Co-ordinating Committee.

 

Village Singers: The singers provide entertainment not only in the Village but throughout the Scottburgh & Pennington area. The Village Singers meet on Monday mornings at 10:00 in the Hall to practice. Should you wish to join please come to practice.

Bridge: Bridge is played in the hall from 13:30 on Thursdays. If you are interested please meet at the hall.

Swimming Pool: The use of the swimming pool is restricted to residents and friends. A charge of R5.00 per month is levied for the use of the pool and is payable at the Tuck Shop.

Water Exercises: Water exercises are held in the pool at 07:00 in the summer months. Breathing and stretching exercises are held during the winter months. All are welcome.

Yoga: Classes are held in the Hall on Wednesday mornings at 07:00. The cost is R5.00 per session.

Gym: The gym is opposite the Post Office and is available for residents. A usage fee of R5.00 is payable monthly at the Tuck Shop.

Bingo: Every Tuesday afternoon at 14:00 in the dining room.

Chinese Painting: Meets Monday and Friday at 09:00 in the dining room.

Walking Group: Umdoni residents are allowed to walk in the grounds of Selborne Golfing Estate provided names and cottage numbers are supplied in advance. Walkers meet at the Village water feature on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 06:00 during summer and 06:30 during winter. Walkers meet at 08:00 on Saturday mornings to walk through the Umdoni Golf Course.

Card Renovation: Wednesday afternoons at 14:00 a group meets to renovate cards for sale at various local outlets. Cards are sold from the Committee office in the Library, Wednesday and Friday 09:30 to 11:00. Cards for all occasions cost R4.00 each.

Bowling Club: The Alexandra Memorial Bowling Club is a club established by the Umzinto Memorial Hall Trust. Membership of the Club, on payment of the prescribed subscription, is open to all residents wishing to play bowls or to be a Social Member. Details of membership and social activities can be found on their notice boards in the clubhouse.

Tennis Club: Like the Bowling Club, this club was established by the same trust. The tennis club is run by an outside committee and residents are welcome to join. Club days are Thursday and Saturday afternoons.

Woodcarvers: Woodcarvers meet in the dining room from 09:00 to 12:00 on the first and third Tuesday of each month. R10 per lesson and a plank of wood costs R40.00

Golf: Played at local clubs regularly - Dates and times are advertised on the Notice Board in the Post Room.

Group Fishing: Dates and times are also on the notice board.
